Key Health Tests

Not only is it important to educate yourself about your body, it is also important to know how well it is aging

For example, first dental exam should be at 1 year of age per the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and every 6 months thereafter for lifetime. Heart Disease and other systemic diseases have been linked to gum disease therefore you need to maintain a close watch on your oral health.

The National Women's Health Information Center lists the most important exams women should maintain
 

Thyroid test
Every 5 years starting at the age of 35

Blood pressure test
Every 2 years starting at the age of 18

Cholesterol test
How often you should take this test depends on your health so ask your doctor. Be sure to remember Latina women have a different diet than other cultures.

Blood sugar test or diabetes test
Every 3 years starting at 45

Dental Exam
Every 6 months, start at the age of 1; every 3 months during pregnancy

Bone mineral density test
Take your first test near 40 and ask your doctors for further details

Mammogram
About every year starting at the age of 40

Pelvic exam
Every year if you are sexually active

Colorectal health testing
First test near 50 and ask your doctor for further instructions

Colonoscopy
Every 10 years once 50.

Eye Exam
Every 1-2 years if you are older than 65 years old Every 2-4 years if you are between the ages of 20 and 64 years old.

Everyone is different, be sure to check with your doctor on the frequency of testing for you.
